Social capital, broadly defined as the ability and potential for people to cooperate and work together and to interact and exchange positively, plays a vital role in community wellbeing and economic prosperity. The report delves into how social trust, community engagement, and cultural identity are embedded in Guernsey’s social fabric and how modern pressures are impacting these elements. This innovative approach has allowed us to uncover nuanced perspectives on how social capital influences daily life and broader economic and social outcomes.

The findings reveal that Guernsey boasts exceptionally strong social capital, characterised by high levels of interpersonal trust, community solidarity, and a profound sense of belonging among its residents. However, several challenges and vulnerabilities pose significant threats to the continued strength of Guernsey’s social capital. The findings pose important questions about how the island can preserve social capital while adapting to new challenges and opportunities. By understanding and addressing the current challenges while capitalising on the island’s strengths, Guernsey can ensure that its social capital remains a cornerstone of its social and economic prosperity.
